Belong Aotearoa Sector Update 26 March 2026
As a Pākehā woman brought up in a worldview that frames things in either/or terms, I recognise how dominant systems of power rely on binary thinking to separate, manage, and dominate people and ideas. In reality, the world is more complex than these rigid divisions.
It’s about the journey, not the destination
Hailing originally from Sudan, Hala and her husband relocated. Starting again in a new country was not easy, but coming across the Safari Playgroups has made a big difference in Hala’s journey.
Belong Aotearoa Sector Update 12 March 2026
It has been both interesting and concerning to see how the conflict in the Middle East is covered in Aotearoa’s media. Much of the focus has been on domestic impacts: gas prices, rising inflation, and how our government is navigating a fraying global order. We’re Hiring! Community Engagement Support
Belong Aotearoa is seeking a highly organised, community-minded person with strong administration skills to support our engagement work and Refugee Alliance coordination while covering a staff member on leave. The role focuses on event and workshop logistics, handling correspondence, and ensuring our commitments to communities are delivered with care.
Belong Aotearoa Sector Update 26 February 2026
We often respond to the visible consequences of harm but stop short of addressing the root causes.
Across Aotearoa, we can see this pattern playing out in all sorts of ways: debates about racism in Parliament; the scaling back of diversity, equity and inclusion measures in the Public Service Amendment Bill; the increased powers for immigration officers to question suspected overstayers; the use of move-along orders in response to homelessness.
Join the Belong Aotearoa Board
We are seeking Board members who bring strong governance experience, finance and/or fundraising expertise and senior executive experience in the non-profit sector such as CEO, Executive Director or equivalent, with deep understanding of operating in a funding-dependent environment.
Belong Aotearoa Sector Update 12 February 2026
Last week, we all marked Waitangi Day in different ways. Interestingly, the Human Rights Commission also released its latest Horizon survey, which tracks people’s awareness, understanding, and attitudes towards Te Tiriti over time.
Haere rā e hoa Ron
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our friend, colleague, and Belong Aotearoa Board member, Ron Lal.
